1. Lithium Extraction from Minerals (Hard Rock Mining):
a. Exploration and Mining:

The process begins with the identification of lithium-bearing minerals in geological deposits.
Once a viable deposit is found, mining operations commence, utilizing either open-pit or underground mining methods.

b. Crushing and Grinding:

Mined ore is crushed into smaller pieces and ground into a fine powder. This increases the surface area of the ore for subsequent processing.

c. Concentration:

The powdered ore undergoes concentration to increase the lithium content. Techniques such as flotation are employed to separate lithium-bearing minerals from gangue minerals.

d. Roasting or Acid Digestion (Optional):

Some ores may undergo roasting or acid digestion to convert lithium-bearing minerals into a more soluble form, depending on the desired end product.

e. Leaching:

The concentrated ore is subjected to leaching, where it is mixed with a leaching agent (e.g., sulfuric acid) to dissolve the lithium into solution, leaving impurities behind.

f. Purification and Precipitation:

The lithium-containing solution is purified to remove impurities through filtration and chemical treatments.
Lithium compounds such as lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide are then precipitated from the solution by adjusting pH or adding specific reagents.

g. Drying and Packaging:

The precipitated lithium compounds are dried to remove excess moisture and packaged for distribution.

2. Lithium Extraction from Brine Solutions:
a. Brine Extraction:

Brine is pumped from underground reservoirs or salars (salt flats) that naturally contain dissolved lithium.

b. Solar Evaporation:

The extracted brine is pumped into large evaporation ponds, where it is exposed to sunlight. Over time, water evaporates, leaving behind a concentrated lithium-rich solution.

c. Purification and Processing:

The concentrated brine undergoes purification to remove impurities, typically through precipitation, filtration, and chemical treatments.
The purified lithium solution is processed to extract lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide, similar to the process for mineral-based lithium extraction.

These processes are adapted and optimized based on factors such as the specific characteristics of the deposit, environmental considerations, and the desired end products.
